GILGIT: Over 200 schoolteachers, mostly females, of the Social Action Programme (SAP) from the seven districts of Gilgit-Baltistan have been staging a sit-in at Gadibagh here since November 18 to demand regularisation of service and payment of the withheld salaries.Despite harsh weather, the teachers have vowed to continue their agitation till their demands were met.

Gulaam Akbar, the SAP teachers` association president, told Dawn that hundreds of teachers, mostly females along with the children, had been protesting for their rights since November 18.

He said that the PPP-led regional government during its five-year ten-ure didn`t resolve their problems despite making promises.

Mr Akbar said that many teachers and their children had to be hospitalised as their condition deteriorated during the protest due to the cold weather.

On November 17, the Gilgit police arrested 15 SAP teachers, and later freed them on bail for blocking roads in the city. The police also registered FIR against 15 male teachers.
