IJT accused of attacking PU teacher`s car

LAHORE: The Punjab University (PU) administration has alleged that Islami Jamiat Tulaba activists on Friday attacked the car of a female faculty member, while IJT leaders say the former registrar is staging a drama to gain sympathies.

A PU spokesman claimed over 12 IJT activists attacked the car of Ayesha Hakeem, a faculty member of the Institute of Communication Studies (ICS) and daughter-inlaw of former PU registrar Prof Dr Muhammad Amin Athar, near hostel number 14 when she was going to drop her husband to his office.

Ayesha, who was recently appointed at ICSon contract, alleged the IJT activists, who had created a ruckus near the exit gate of the hostel, stopped her car, hurled threats at her and asked her and her husband to come out.

Upon refusal, she claimed the activists tried to open the doors of the car that were locked. The activists then attacked the car with hockeys and clubs. She also claimed they smashed car`s windscreen, windows and other parts.

The PU spol(esman said the former registrar hadrecentlyrelinquished his charge where he had been serving after his retirement.

PU IJT Nazim Abdul Mugeet alleged the former registrar, whom he claimed had been recently removed from ofhce, had staged thisdrama.

He said allegations against the IJT were not new and said Prof Athar should not use his personal disputes to gain the VC`s sympathies.

Meanwhile, PU Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Mujahid Kamran strongly condemned the `assault` on the faculty member and added the IJT had become irredeemable.

The VC also summoned an emergency meeting of heads of all departments on Monday.

ICS faculty members also unanimously passed a resolution condemning the attack.

They demanded the police inspector general and capital city police officer immediately take notice of the incident and take stern action against the culprits.
