Two cops killed in Swabi attack

SWABI/ MIRAMSHAH, Nov 17: Two police constables were killed when unidentified assailants attacked a checkpost in Razaar tehsil of Swabi district on Sunday, while a security official was injured when a remote-controlled bomb hit the forces` convoy on Mirali road in North Waziristan.

Police in Swabi said that the attackers stormed the Darang checkpost and shot dead the two constables who were on duty. The two were identified as Sajjid Khan and Mubashir Nadar. The other policemen of the checkpost had gone out for routine patrolling in the area.

When contacted, district police officer Sajjad Khan told this correspondent that it was not immediately known how the militants came and attacked the post. `We have been making efforts to ascertain how the militants reached the police post and carried out the attack,` he said.

`Usually, they use motorbikes in such incidents and they might have come on motorcycles here,` Mr Khan said.

He rejected reports that the militants also set the police post to fire after the attack.

`They planted an improvised explosive device (IED) to the post, but the same was defused by the bomb disposal squad, he said. The police have registered an FIR against the unidentified militants. In August, two policemen and a detainee were killed and three others sustained injuries in the same area when suspected militants ambushed a police mobile van.

In another incident on Sunday, one woman was killedand four others, including three women, sustained injuries in a hand grenade attack on a house in Kashkol Banda in Bamkhel.

Registering FIR in the city police station, injured Fazal Sani, owner of the house, said that some unidentified men hurled a hand grenade at his house, leaving him and four members of him family injured.

He said that Shirat Begum, wife of Abdur Rehman, succumbed to her injuries in the district headquarters hospital. The four injured included Fazal Sani, Bakhthiya Bibi, Omera Begum and another woman whose name could not be ascertained.

Mr Sani said that the attackers fled on their motorcycles. He said that they had no enmity with anyone. Police have registered the case.

In an isolated incident in Swabi, a driver of tractor-trolley was killed when it fell from Topi Bridge. Police in Topi police station said that the driver belonged to the Kotha village, but his name was yet to be ascertained.

In Miramshah, a security official was injured when a remote-controlled bomb hit a convoy of the security forces on Mirali road in North Waziristan Agency on Sunday.

The administration has imposed indefinite curfew and traffic remained suspended on all roads in the agency.

Sources said that the forces convoy was targeted near Karam Kot in Mirali. The security forces later launched a search operation in the area.

Gunship helicopters also hovered over the area after the incident.
