Arab Spring can be replicated in Asia`

By A Reporter 2013-03-19
ISLAMABAD, March 18: A professor from Germany on Monday said Arab Spring was a revolution by Facebook and Twitter generation and it was unique because governments were changed peacefully.

`It can be replicated in Asia because of similar situation and increasing involvement of youth in politics,` said Claudia Derichs, Professor of International Development Studies, University of Marburg, Germany.

The event was a public talk on: `The Impact of Arab Spring on South and East Asia`, organised by the Institute of Strategic Studies (ISS) Islamabad.

The professor said that nations, countries and governments should respect and allow those persons to rule who had the confidence of people of the country because it was the true sprit of democracy.

She highlighted the dichotomy between the social contracts and social inequalities in South Asia and referred to the middle classes in the region as the main stakeholders of change, and their economic interests as thepossible force behind any such transformation.

Price-hike, unemployment and increasing problems can push middle and lower middle classes to change the governments, she said.

While replying to questions of the participants she said that she could not reject the possibility that intervention of United States in Iraq, Libya and other countries was to protect Israel rather than strengthening democracy.

However, she said that some countries of Europe e.g. France were not willing to follow the instructions of the US regarding those intervention and they resisted.

Former ambassador and Chairman ISS Gul Haneef said that there was very strong influence of Arab countries on Asian, especially Muslim countries and they could be affected by every development in Arab region.

`Our think-tanks should watch it closely and devise strategies to deal with situation arising from the changes in Arab countries, he said.
