Van on Morsi route alerts security

RAWALPINDI, March 18: Appearance of a van on Monday on service road of Islamabad Expressway, from where the convoy of Egyptian President Mohammad Morsi was to move, alerted security, police sources said.

The security officials pounced upon the vehicle and captured its driver Malik Naveed and his brother conductor Malik Imran, and a brief clash between the conductor and the security official ensued.

The security officials allegedly beat the conductor with their rifles butt, who received injuries and was shifted to Benazir Bhutto Hospital by Rescue 1122.

Tariq Mehmood ASI of Sadigabad police station told Dawn that the incident happened when a van appeared at Seahi chowk of Kuri Road sometime before the VVIP movement.

He said it caused road blockade that alerted the security staff deployed on the VVIP route.

`The conductor was beaten with the butt that caused injuries on the back of his head, ASI Tariq said.

The Shahzad Town SHO, Sajjad Haider Bukhari, told Dawn that there was nothing serious as a conductor had only tried to cross the road.

The Egyptian President Mohammad Morsi arrived Islamabad on Monday morning on a one-day state visit to Pakistan at the invitation of President Asif Ali Zardari.
