Four killed as rain, hailstorm lash KP

MINGORA: Four persons were killed and several others received injuries as torrential rain, hailstorm and windstorm lashed several districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Tuesday.

Several houses were collapsed, electric poles and trees were uprooted and power supply was disrupted in different areas of the provincedue to heavy downpour. Casualties also took place due to rain and lightning in Swat, Charsadda and Swabi districts of the province.

Three persons were killed and five others injured in rain-related incidents in different parts of Swat.

Kabal and adjoining areas of Swat plunged into darkness as electric poles were uprooted by flood in the Swat River on late Monday night.

Kabal SHO Mohammad Iqbal said that roof of a house in far-flung Zorah area was caved in at 2am on early Tuesday morning due to heavy downpour. Three inmates identified as Falooda, wife of Usman; her 16year-old son Khurshid Ali and nineyear-old daughter Sabeela were killed in the incident. He said that Norisha, Aalia and Gul Nabi sus-tained injuries as they were buried alive under the debris of the collapsed house.

Police with the help of local people retrieved the injured from the debris and shifted them to a local hospital.

In Nokhara area of tehsil Matta, two persons were injured when roof of Sarbaz Khan`s house collapsed due to heavy rain. The injured include Mutabar, 9, and Tufail, 5, who were taken to civil hospital in Matta.

The widespread rain in upper parts of the district also caused flood in the Swat River. Two electricity poles along the riverbank were uprooted by the flood water.

Power supply to tehsil Kabal and parts of tehsil Matta remained sus-pended.

In Charsadda, a young man, working in his fields, was killed by lightning in Hari Chand area.

The local people found the body of Hazart Jan in the fields on Tuesday morning. Heavy downpour coupled with windstorm hit several localities of Charsadda particularly Hari Chan belt of the district. The windstorm uprooted electric poles and trees in the area.

In Swabi, rain coupled with hailstorm and thunderstorm damaged standing crops and vegetables in different areas.

The most affected areas include Razar, Chotta Lahor and Topi tehsils. Power supply was also suspended to various areas of the district due to windstorm.
