Three IUB staffers injured in clash with `expelled` students

BAHAWALPUR: Three employees of Islamia University Bahawalpur (IUB) were injured on Wednesday in a clash with `expelled` students who allegedly blocked the main gate and attempted to prevent the exit of the vice chancellor from the Baghdadul Jadid campus here.

According to IUB PRO Shehzad Khalid, the trouble started when some `expelled` students assembled near Baghdad campus canteen on Wednesday, raised slogans againstthe IUB administration and demanded readmission to university. Later, they shifted their protest to the Baghdad campus main gate and blocked it for passage.

Meanwhile, VC Prof Dr Qaisar Mushtaq, who was at Baghdad campus to preside over an IT seminar, reached the main entrance blocked by the protesters and returned to his office at old Abbasia campus.

On seeing the VC`s car, university security guards lifted the barrier to provide passage to hiscar.Thisinfuriated the protesters, who started pelting them with stones.

The PRO told Dawn that two guards and an employee of the university suffered injuries. They were provided with aid by the university medical centre.

A police party on receipt of information rushed to the scene. According to PRO, legalaction against the alleged outsiders was in progress as the VC held discussions with DPO Sarfraz Ahmed Falki to the effect.

There were also reports of firing allegedly by the outsiders but the PRO did not confirm it.

According to an IUB press release, the demonstrators who were expelled from the university in the past were allegedly involved in criminal activities and now they tried to instigate other students at the cafeteria. It said the guards removed them from the cafeteria and they gathered at the main Baghdad campus gate where they attempted to put hurdles on the way of the vice chancellor.The security men immediately took action and removed the hurdles.

Later the suspects threw stones which caused injuries to three university men and damaged windscreen of the vehicle ofthe security section.

ARMS SEIZED: The Baghdadul Jadid police on Wednesday claimed to have recovered a cache of arms from a car and arrested two men.

Police said a team deployed at a picket checked a suspected car and recovered 8,000 cartridges of 12-bore pistols, 10,000 bullets of 30-bore pistols, 200 rounds of nine MM pistols, 22 pistols and two pump action.

Police said suspects Amir Shehzad and Muhammad Sadiq were being quizzed.

INMATE DIES: Condemned prisoner Muhammad Mukhtar lodged in new central jail died of jaundice here on Wednesday at Bahawal Victoria Hospital.

The convict belonging to 107 DB (Yazman tehsil) had contracted jaundice and was admitted to BVH a few days back.

His body was handed over to his family.
