Teachers defer protest after CM`s assurance

KARACHI: University teachers` leaders said on Monday that they had postponed their protest after a meeting with the chief minister who, they said, had assured them of meeting all their demands, including arrest of culprits involved in the 1(illing of Dr Syed Waheed-ur-Rehman.

The delegation comprising representatives of the Karachi University Teachers Society (Kuts) and the Federation of All Pakistan Universities Academic Staff Association (Fapuasa) included Karachi University (KU) Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Mohammad Qaiser.

During the meeting held at Chief Minister House, the delegation drew the attention of the chief minister to the killing of three university teachers Prof Shakeel Auj, Prof Jawed Iqbal Qazi and Dr Syed Waheed-ur-Rehman within one and a half years.

They demanded that all culprits involved in thosebrutal acts be brought to justice at the earliest so that teachers could work with a peace of mind. They also called for security measures for teachers that, they said, were forced to work in an insecure environment.

Sharing teachers` concerns, Syed Qaim Ali Shah condemned the killing of the teachers and told the delegation that the police were pursuing the case of Dr Waheed and had arrested four suspects in the case.

He also assured the teachers that the victim families would be paid compensation and a judicial commission/joint investigation team would be set up within 15 days to probe Dr Waheed`s killing.

Prof Naimatullah Leghari and Prof Jamil Hasan Kazmi represented Fapuasa and Kuts, respectively.

Secretary to the chief minister Mumtaz Ali Shah and additional IG Ghulam Qadir Thebo were also present.

The university teachers had earlier given a 15-day ultimatum following the murder of KU teacher Dr Waheed-ur-Rehman, saying that they would launch a protest movement if the government failed to arrest the killers during the period.
