Detention of envoy

NEW DELHI: The Pakistani High Commission protested yesterday [June 17] to the Foreign Ministry here against the `illegal detention` of the High Commissioner in front of the door of the Chinese Embassy during Friday`s anti-Chinese demonstrations.

A Note handed over recalled that the High Commissioner Arshad Hussain had to wait 45 minutes before an Indian Police officer let him enter the Embassy.

Commenting on the Note, a Pakistani spokesman said, the High Commission doctor sent to treat the injured Chinese was forced to allow the diplomatic car to be searched, which was a violation of the Indo-Pakistan agreement on the immunity of certain non-diplomatic personnel.

Pakistan had already protested about the search of a High Commission van at the entrance to the Chinese Embassy.

Meanwhile, an Indian Government spokesman confirmed that the two Chinese diplomats under orders of deportation were injured in the crowd attack on the Chinese Embassy. They are being allowed to stay till they are fit to travel.

Neither of the diplomats was taken to hospital. Of the seven Chinese admitted to hospital, four were discharged yesterday. The rest were reported to be progressing well. Indian officials visited them. In a three-volume report, the result of a yearlong study, the panel said there is no biological, technological or economic reason that the problem cannot be overcome.

However, the panel warned that the severity and duration of the world food problem are so great that a massive, long-range innovative ef fort will be required to master it.
