KOHAT: Frequent power fluctuations here have damaged precious electric appliances like air conditioners and refrigerators of Pesco consumers, resulting in losses to many people here in the district.

Due to extreme fluctuations and snapping for few seconds in the electricity supply the gadgetslike refrigerators, automatic generators, ACs, water pumps and room coolers have developed serious faults. In case of repair of AC and fridge, which are indispensable items in summer, people agree to whatever they are asked.

One Adnan of Mohallah Mian Badshah said that he suffered a loss of Rs80,000 and had to replace the AC and generator.

Usman, who lives in Garden Colony, said that his fridge developed a defect due to power fluctuations and after spending Rs7,000 on it the technician advised him to replace it.

He said that a new refrigerator would cost him Rs40,000.

Due to the fluctuations Abdul Jalil`s generator, air conditioner and refrigerator stopped working. He had to spend Rs2,200 on repair of the generator, Rs7,000 on fridge and Rs3,500 on AC. District councillor Zahoor Noor attributed the unresolved problem of fluctuations for many years to the main Rawalpindi grid station established in 1970. He said that the old grid station was unable to bear the load of hundreds of colonies which had erupted on the Hangu, Bannu, Peshawar and Pindi roads.

He stated that the city now needed a new grid station to ensure smooth supply of electricity to consumers besides resolving the problem of fluctuations. He said that the cases of theft were on the rise because people did not want to pay bills to the Pesco which, they said, had failed to resolve their problems related to smooth supply of electricity.

The residents have also been facing shortage of drinking water these days as local wells have dried up due to insufficient rains during past few months. Meanwhile, the tehsil municipal administration is asking the people to first clear their outstanding bills and then it will restore the water supply.Cor respondent
