KARACHI: More than 2,000 police personnel are providing security cover to the polio workers at present engaged in the door-to-door oral polio vaccination campaign under way in 161 union committees in the city.

Officials associated with the Sindh Emergency Operation Centre said here on Tuesday that a total number of 1.8 million under-five children were to be vaccinated in high-risk UCs of the metropolis. A pragmatic approach had also been adopted to counter instances of refusals through active involvement of area notables and district administration, they said in reply to a question.

Mentioning that the elimination of poliovirus from the local environs was the top priority, they said a strong monitoring mechanism had been evolved for the campaign itself. -APP
