LAHORE: The King Edward Medical University academic council has recommended major punishment to two young doctors for allegedly humiliating a senior medical teacher for not inducting colleagues of their choice in postgraduate training at his department.

The academic council which met on Tuesday at the KEMU on this issue noted with grave concern that the in-question two members of the Young Doctors Association used abusive language against Paediatrics Professor Dr Akmal Laeeg, physically thrashed him andthen locked him at his office which, according to them, was an unbearable act.

The house unanimously decided that the guilty young medics be awarded maximum punishment.

The major punishment entails `termination of postgraduate` training of the young doctors provided under the KEMU Act, an official who is close to the information told Dawn.

He said the action was proposed on the basis of the report of an inquiry committee.

The committee comprised senior medics of the KEMU which con-firmed the allegations levelled against t wo Y DA men Dr Inamullah Barki and Dr Umair Rana, he said.

The report was shared with the participants in the academic council meeting.

He said some 28 members of the academic council attended the meeting and almost all advocated severe punishment in order to discourage the trend of humiliation of teaching faculty.

A senior medical teacher elaborated the proceeding of the house saying it may take one or two weeks to dispose ofthe case.

He said the academic council wasyet to pen down minutes of the meeting held on Tuesday.

Af ter defining the `major punishment` provided under the KEMU Act, the council will send its recommendations to the vice chancellor of the King Edward Medical University.

If the `guilty medics` challenged the decision of the council, the matter would be referred to the KEMU Senate for review.

`Then the Senate`s decision will require approval by the governor who is the chancellor of the university`, he said.
