Market committee head booked for flouting local poll code

TOBA TEK SINGH: The Pirmahal market committee chairman was booked on Wednesday for violation of local government election code and hurling threats at the assistant commissioner.

According to FIR, market committee chairman Chaudhry Shafgat Rasool had been using his official jeep for the campaigns of his brother, son and his nephew who were contesting local elections.

On being informed of the violation of election code, AC Hafiz Muhammad Najeeb along with his staff visited a corner meeting where the market committee chairman was present with the official jeep.When the AC`s staff asl(ed Mr Rasool to return the jeep as it was a violation of election code, the chairman got infuriated and misbehaved with them.

He also hurled threats at the AC of dire consequencesin the presence of some 150 people attending the corner meeting, the FIR lodged by Pirmahal police said.

On the complaint of AC, the police registered a case against Mr Rasool under sections 6, 7 and 27-G of Election Code of Conduct 2015.

INJURED: A supporter of a local poll candidate in Union Council No 60 of Kamalia was injured critically when his brother who was backing his opponent shot at him at Mouza Khode late on Tuesday.

Police said the suspect, SarfrazAhmad and his brother Umer Draz quarreled with each other during a poll-related discussion. Sarfraz fired at Umer Draz, leaving him seriously injured. Draz was rushed to Kamalia Tehsil Headquarters Hospital from where doctors referred him to Faisalabad`s Allied Hospital.

Meanwhile, on the order of DPO, police impounded the licensed arms of all local government election candidates.

An official said the impounded arms would be returned to the candidates three days after the polling day.

Punjab government had announced on Tuesday that the local poll candidates should deposit their licensed weapons with police to avert poll-related violence.
