Where`s the Apple? on 26th

KARACHI: A dance-based presentation titled `Where is the Apple?` will be held at the Arts Council on Feb 26, said artist Amin Gulgee at a press conference on Wednesday evening.

Mr Gulgee, who has directed and choreographed the show, said the performance is divided into three parts. The first will be `inside the charbagh`; the second,`outside the char-bagh` and the third `becoming the char-bagh`. As the `bagh` suggests, the garden, which originated in Persia, plays an important part in the whole act featuring four artists Joshinder Chaggar, Sunil Shankar, Wijdan and Irum highlighting the tension and conflict between men and women.

Mr Gulgee said the idea for the show came to him when he first met Chaggar. She inspired him so much that he thought of coming up with something that`s more to do with dance than anything else. However, he said, it tooksome time to develop the concept. He lauded all the performers for working hard on the project.

When asked about the title of the event, whether theapple symbolised original sin or fertility, Mr Gulgee replied it`s open to interpretation. The invite to the programme was accompanied by a quote, `Between men and womenthere`s no friendship possible.

There is passion, enmity, worship, love but no friendship.

A question was then raised whether `friendship` was devoid of passion or love towhich Mr Gulgee responded he was not sure.

Answering another query, the producer of the show Ponune Gohar said there`s no dialogue in the performance, and stressed on the fact that nobody would speak in English in it. She claimed the art industry in the country is thriving as plays and art exhibitions are being held on a regular basis. She said she had worked as art director on the recently staged musical `Grease` but `Where is the Apple` is closer to her heart.

Expanding on the idea, Mr Gulgee said there would be live music during the presentation, played by Sikandar Mufti and a couple of other young musicians, because live music exuded a lot of energy.

As to how the general public would perceive the show, he hoped it would like it because it`s `from the heart` that the presentation was being put up.

Ms Chaggar said she`d done many theatrical projects but this one was on a different level. She praised Mr Gulgee for designing and developing the concept and argued that one should not underestimate the audience.

`Where is the Apple` will be presented for the media on Feb 25.
