Gang of robbers arrested after `encounter`

ISLAMABAD: A gang of robbers was apprehended on Thursday after an `encounter` with the police, which led to the arrest of four alleged culprits.
Police said no one was injured in the encounter, but two members of the gang managed to escape.
The gang was apprehended after the anti-car lifting cell of the capital police received information on the presence ofrobbersin the area adjacent to I.J. Principal Road. In response, a team was constituted to raid the hideout.
Police said the suspected robbers spotted the raiding team and began bring. They said the suspects escaped and headed towardLJ. Principal Road, and were followed by the police. Four suspects were apprehended, while two escaped.
Rs50,000 in cash, a pistol, bullets and daggers were recovered from the suspects, police added. They said the suspects were part of a notorious gang of robbers who snatched vehicles, especially motorcycles, and used to strike in the Sabzi Mandi area. Five cases were registered against them at the Sabzi Mandi police station in this regard.
They added that separate cases of attempted murder and assault, as well as cases under the arms ordinance and foreigners act were also registered at the aforementioned station.
Separately, vehicle snatchers stole six vehicles in separate inci-dents on Thursday, while robbers and burglars struck at two locations and stole cash and valuables, police said.
Three Toyota Corollas belonging to Afzal Khan, Aziz Ahmed and Imtiaz Ahmed were stolen from the parking areas of Polyclinic, Ghauri Town Phase 5 and I-8 Markaz, respectively.
Police added that three Honda 125 motorcycles belonging to Kashif Mushtaq, Nafis Abbas and Imran Shah were also stolen from Shahzad Town, I-10/4 and Aabpara market, respectively.
In addition, a man intercepted a woman in I-8/3 and stole gold ornaments and cash worth Rs120,000 before fleeing.
In a separate incident, police said burglars broke into theMobilink office in Pindorian and stole equipment, including batteries worth Rs169,000. The suspects were caught by locals after a brief chase and handed over to the police.
In Rawalpindi, robbers stole $5,000 from an individual in Saddar, and another individual was robbed of cash in the Airport police area.
Naheed Ahmed, a Faisalabad resident, told the police that he was heading home after withdrawing $5,000 at the Mall when two unidentified individuals held him at gunpoint and robbed him of the sum.
Nadeem Iqbal told Airport police that he was in his car when he was intercepted by two unidentified motorcycle.
