Pakistani, Italian scientists to conduct joint research

ISLAMABAD: Speakers at a conference urged the government to provide a conducive environment to scientists so that they can carry out research works for the development of the country.

The five-day `international scientific spring (ISS)`, jointly organised by the National Centre for Physics (NCP) and the Dr Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics, Italy, concluded with the commitment that Pakistani and Italian scientists would start research in physics and allied sciences.

In the experience-sharing conference, 12 foreign and 300 local researchers delivered lectures and presentations.

At the concluding ceremony, Prof Joseph Niemela, the coordinator for the Dr Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics, said Italy and Pakistan were committed to working for the betterment of Pakistani science community. He said there was a dire need to create awareness among the people about the application of research in physics as it would improve the industry. He said ICTP would always support local scientists in organising scientific activities with an aim to promote scientific culture in Pakistan as well as in the region.

Dr Hafeez Hoorani, the director-general NCP, urged the young researchers to use their best capabilities and worl( on innovative and new technologies to play an integral role for the development of the country.

He said the scientists would perform better if they were provided with a conducive environment. `The five-day activity is seventh of its kind and proved a fruitful platform to discuss the current and future prospects of physics and its related fields.

Dr Riffat Mahmood Qureshi said the main purpose of holding the ISS was to inspire young students and researchers to carry out quality research with enthusiasm. He said the conference was conducted to evolve a sustainable platform for the local and foreign participants to meet and exchange scientific knowledge about recent developments.A Reporter
