Khyber students complain about closure of schools, colleges

Bureau Report 2015-03-21
PESHAWAR: The Khyber Agency students on Friday complained about the prolonged closure of their educational institutions and demanded their early reopening by reconstruction of the damaged buildings.

Dil Nawaz Afridi, a member of the organising committee of Afridi Students Union, told reporters at the Peshawar Press Club that the people of the region, especially students, had badly suffered due to displacement and they continued to suffer but the federal government didn`t bother about facilitating them.

He said poor parents were unable to educate their children, who had no option but to abandon studies.

`We have been fighting for the rights of the students. The main purpose of the formation of student union is to support students during times of need,` he said.

On the occasion, Dil Nawaz announced names of the newlyelected office-bearers of the Afridi Students Union for the session 2015-16.

According to him, Malik Siraj Afridi was elected unopposed the new ASU central president, Ismail Afridi central general secretary and Shokeb Afridi central chairman.

He said four other candidates submitted nomination papers for contesting the elections for the ASU president`s post but they were found to be ineligible.

`According to the ASU Constitution, a candidate should have a master`s degree to contest elections and these four candidates didn`t meet that requirement,` he said.

Newly-elected ASU president Siraj Afridi later said he would raise voice for the rights of militancy-hit Afridi students and do strive to serve them.

He said the ASU believed in the restoration of peace and education and would use all sorts of efforts to achieve such noble cause.

`We will perform a key role in the repatriation of internally displaced persons of Bara tehsil in Khyber Agency,` he said.

Siraj Afridi urged students to maintain close liaison with the newly-elected representatives of the student union for the early resolution of their problems.
