Blast kills two would-be bombers, handler

PESHAWAR: Three alleged terrorists, including two suspected suicide bombers and their handler, were killed when a suicide vest worn by one of them went off in Regi Lalma on Friday morning.

Police said that the terrorists, riding a motorcycle, were trying to sneak into the provincial capital to target a school or a police station.

An of ficial at Regi Lalma police station told Dawn that the blast occurred in the Abdur Rehman Qilla neighbourhood when the motorcycle hit a speed breaker, triggering the detonator of the suicide vest worn by one of the bombers. He added that the area abuts the Mullagori area of Khyber Agency.

Cantonment Circle SP Kashif Zulfiqar told Dawn that the blast occurred at around 4:16am, adding that the police were alerted to the incident by local residents. Soon after the incident, Crime Scene Unit officials and senior police officers rushed to the site to collect evidence.

SP Zulfiqar said that two of the terrorists were wearing suicide vests, while the third was probably their handler or driver. He said that the suicide vest worn by one of the attaclcers was recovered intact and later defused by the police, adding that the law enforcers also found nine hand grenades and two sub machine guns (SMGs) in their possession.

Separately, an alleged terrorist was arrested while planting an improvised explosive device in the Achini locality of the city. Police identified the terrorist as Muhammad Farooq, a resident of Khyber Agency.
