LAHORE: Rain that was heavy at places, coupled with windstorm, lashed various cities of Punjab, including Lahore, on Tuesday, claiming one life and injuring around 35 in Dera Ghazi Khan.

In the provincial metropolis, rain occurred in the evening and it was accompanied by a windstorm having a velocity of 77km per hour.

It was heavy in the southern and central Lahore than around the airportarea.

Our correspondent from Dera Ghazi Khan said a girl died and around 35 people were injured in different incidentscaused bythe rain that had been continuing since Monday. The Met department reported 90mm of rain in this district during the past 24 hours.

Moist currents from Arabian Sea are penetrating upper and central parts of the country and are being converted into rain by a westerly wave affecting most upper and central parts of the country. The wave is likely to persist till Thursday.

A senior meteorologist said the pre-monsoon spell was affecting various cities lil(e Lahore, Faisalabad and Kasur and was likely to give more rain in the next 24 hours.

The Met department forecast rain/dust-thundershower (with isolated heavy falls) with gusty winds at scattered places in Rawalpindi, Lahore, Gujranwala, Sargodha, Faisalabad, DG Khan, Multan, Bahawalpur, Sahiwal divisions, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Fata, Islamabad and Kashmir, while at isolated places in Gilgit-Baltistan, Zhob, Shaheed Benazirabad and Hyderabad divisions in the next 24 hours. Light rain/ drizzle expected at few places along Sindhcoast.
