KMC begins vehicle verification to stop fuel misuse

KARACHI: To stop misuse of fuel, the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) has launched a programme to physically verify whether its vehicles actually exist and are in good condition.

Mayor Wasim Akhtar said the first phase of the campaign will be completed by Friday.The physical verification of the vehicles has been launched after complaints that fuel worth millions of rupees was being released for the vehicles which were either not in order or did not exist.

`The first phase of the campaign will be completed on Friday. The vehicles which have not been sent to the relevant department for inspection will not be provided fuel,` said anofficial.

He added that a fourmember committee, led by MQM`s parliamentary leader in the City Council Aslam Shah Afridi, had been constituted which was supervising physical verification of the KMC vehicles.

Officials said they had checl(ed vehicles which belonged to the departments of health, antiencroachment, media management, katchi abadis,council secretariat, estate, parks and store, and Karachi Institute of Heart Diseases.

`The vehicles of other departments are being checked,` said an official, adding that verification of service vehicles of the KMC would be done in the second phase of the exercise.

They said the mayor had asked to release fuel for those vehicles which were in better condition.
