PPP not ready to hold intra-party polls in KP

Bureau Report 2013-10-21
PESHAWAR, Oct 20: The central leadership of Pakistan People`s Party is not ready to accept the suggestion of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chapter of the party regarding holding intra-party elections on the basis of fresh membership and empowering provincial president to take decisions at his free will. Some senior leaders of PPP told Dawn during background interviews that the suggestions forwarded by the provincial chapter of the party were put in cold storage. The leadership even didn`t respond in negative, they said. They said that putting such suggestions meant to invite the wrath of the central leadership because decentralisation of powers had never been witnessed in the party since its inception. The present and former office-bearers of the party have also shown differences over these suggestions. Some of them have opposed these suggestions, describing these impracticable. However, some other PPP leaders in the province said that it was a good idea to initiate fresh membership drive and reorganise the party by holding intraparty elections. They said that it was good idea to strengthen democratic process in the party but it was not acceptable to the leadership. `How Asif Ali Zardari and his sister Faryal Talpur will like to hand over their powers of issuing tickets to people for contesting elections and nominating office-bearers to others? These are the main sources of revenue generation and maintenance of authority over the party affairs across the country,` a former PPP minister said. He said that senior PPP activists had also apprised central leadersof the party, led by Raza Rabbani, of the situation during their visit to Peshawar recently. They were urged to play their role in reorganisation of the party in the province but they failed to satisfy the workers, he added. A PPP senator said that the party leaders in the province had developed serious differences and everyone was trying to get support of central leaders to serve their self interests even at the cost of party. He said that several leaders were in the run to get the slot of provincial president of the party, but not through intraparty elections. The senator said that in real sense no one was ready to face intra-party elections as no one in the existing setup would be able to win even a low level seat. During the last five years, former ministers and other elected representatives of the party insulted common workers and lost their support, he added. `PPP is now a party of feudal, landlords and people having ill-gotten money to purchase party tickets or get any of the key posts directly from the central leadership without bowing to the workers for seeking votes,` the senator said. Some senior PPP leaders also criticised the emotional speech of Bilawal Bhutto Zardari against different political parties and described it untimely. `He adopted a style as if general elections are close. He should focus on party affairs instead of targeting others,` they said. However, Bilawal`s speech has great impact on the women leaders of his party and they have described it a voice of the workers. Senator Rubeena Khalid, MPA NightOrakzai, former MPAs Shazia Aurangzeb and Shazia Tehmas said that Bilawal spoke the truth and politicians should have the courage to bear it. `MQM, PTI and PML-N are unable to serve people and the credit goes to PPP, which did a lot for welfare of the downtrodden and poor,` Ms Orakzai said, adding that Bilawal`s speech infused a new spirit in the workers. She said that inability of the ruling parties could easily be judged from the skyrocketing price hike, lawlessness and unemployment. Killing of three MPAs in three months was a glaring example of government`s failure, she added. Ms Orakzai said that after arrival of PPP provincial president Anwar Saifullah Khan from London, the party would decide future line of action regarding current issues and party affairs. `We are actually against corruption, misuse of powers and trying to persuade leaders for introducing democratic culture and strengthening party at grassroots level by giving weight to the common workers,` PPP provincial secretary coordination Syed Ayub Shah said. Similarly, PPP provincial spokesman Liaquat Shabab said that the suggestions about intra-party elections were still under consideration at central level. He hoped that the suggestions would be approved. He said that speech of Bilawal boosted moral of the disgruntled workers and the party would be able to get maximum seats in the next elections. PPP acting provincial president Azam Afridi avoided commenting on these issues.Orakzai, former MPAs Shazia Aurangzeb and Shazia Tehmas said that Bilawal spoke the truth and politicians should have the courage to bear it. `MQM, PTI and PML-N are unable to serve people and the credit goes to PPP, which did a lot for welfare of the downtrodden and poor,` Ms Orakzai said, adding that Bilawal`s speech infused a new spirit in the workers.
