Call to introduce Punjabi language at primary level

LAHORE: The Second National Punjabi Conference has called for introducing Punjabi language at the primary level and the establishment of a Punjabi University.

The conference was held here on Saturday under the auspices of the World Punjabi Congress (WPC) to highlight the `injustice` meted out to the Punjabi language and culture.

WPC chairman Fakhar Zaman said: `Despite our efforts Punjabiis not being given the rightful place by introducing it at the pri-mary level, establishment of the Punjabi University, a radical change in the curriculum in colleges and university and employment of over 10,000 MA Punjabi degree holders.

He announced that every month one-day National Conferences would be held to press the government to accept the just demands of the WPC.

He regretted that the Punjab government and its anti-Punjabi bureaucracy was meting out stepmotherly treatment to the language of great Sun poets, cultural ethos and cultural heritage of Punjab province.He further said that TV channels and print media were showing little respect for this language, which, according to a UNESCO report, was the 10th biggest language in the world.

Dr M. Nizamuddin, the chairman of the Higher Commission Education, Punjab, Dr Mehdi Hasan, Zubair Ahmed, Jamil Pal, Mudassar Butt, Ehtesham Rabbani, Tanvir Zahoor, Neelam Bashir, Dr Nabila Omer, Prof Saeed Bhutta, Dr Naheed Shahid, Dr Ismatullah Zahid, Hafeez Sheikh, Parveen Malik and Mushtaq Sufi also spoke.
