BATTAGRAM: The fresh spell of rain which continued for third consecutive day on Sunday exposed the poor performance of the tehsil municipal administration as rainwater entered shops and houses in the Battagram Bazaar area due to clogged sewerage lines, troubling residents and traders.

The locals complained that drains were blocked in almost all parts of the urban locality and the TMA was not bothered to launch cleanliness drive in the area.

Last year, the monsoon rains exposed faulty and poor drainage system in the district as flash floods caused large-scale damage, but the authorities did not pay any heed to rectify the situation, they complained.

The residents saidchoked drains and heaps of garbage dumped on roads could play havoc with their lives in the coming monsoon season.

The dwellers complained that they had repeatedly requested the localgovernment representatives to direct the municipal administration to launch a cleanliness drive, but to no avail.

They pointed out that as majority of drains were not covered, people, particularly traders, threw rubbish in them. Every year roads and streets are submerged by rainwater in monsoon season due to clogged drains, theyregretted.

Drains in Jajmai Bazaar area have also been blocked, spreading foul smell, the locals complained. Jan Mohammad, a shopkeeper in Battagram Bazaar, told Dawn that officials of the district administration and local government were only intereste d in conducting photo sessions on the occasion of launching cleanliness drives, but failed to make the campaigns effective.
