Counter-kidnapping cell set up PESHAWAR, Oct 23: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa police have set up a counter-kidnapping cell in order to preempt and prevent kidnapping for ransom incidents in the provincial metropolis. A statement issued here from the central police office said that the approval was given by IGP Nasir Khan Durrani here on Wednesday.

It stated that deputy superintendent of police (DSP) Tariq Habib had been posted as in-charge of the cell which would directly work under the supervision of IGP.

The cell will remain in close contact round the clock with the officers performing duties in the tribal areas so as to effectively put an end to the menace of kidnapping for ransom. In case of any untoward incident, the officers posted in tribal belt will be directly contacted for quick response against the kidnappers. The cell has also been given the authority of directly collecting phone data of any cellular phone company. Bureau Report Tribal elder escapes attack PARACHINAR, Oct 23: A prominent tribal elder, Malak Saghir Khan, narrowly escaped a suicide attack near a security checkpost in Kurram tribal region on Wednesday.

Sources said Malak Saghir was on his way near a security post at Zarmela, central Kurram Agency when a suicide bomber attempted to approach him. But the security personnel who were manning the checkpost opened fire on the attacker. As a result his jacket exploded before he could reach the vehicle of Malak Saghir. Correspondent Man dies in fire CHARSADDA, Oct 23: A man was burned to death after a makeshift shop at Sardaryab picnic spot caught fire here on Wednesday.

Fire broke out at the fish hut of Shaukat at the busy picnic spot, which engulfed the whole shop within minutes. As a result Sirajul Haq resident of Charsadda Bazaar received severe burn injuries. He later succumbed to his wounds. The shop was completely destroyed. Later the traders` union held a meeting which expressed deep grief over the death.

They demanded of the government to compensate the affected family and the shopkeeper. Correspondent ANP leader`s abduction flayed PESHAWAR, Oct 23: The Awami National Party has expressed grave concern over the kidnapping of Arbab Abdul Zahir Kasi, its former provincial president, who was abducted in Quetta, and demanded immediate measures to get him released from his captors.

ANP organiser in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and chairman election committee Bashir Ahmed Khan Matta in a statement condemned the incident and requested Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry to take suo motu action for the recovery of the kidnapped leader.

He said that Arbab`s vehicle was intercepted on Patel Road by three armed men in a white car in broad daylight and said the law and order situation in Balochistan was getting out of control as targeted killings, bomb and suicide attacks, thefts and other crimes had surged and no efforts were being made to improve the situation. Talking to local mediapersons here on Wednesday, he said it was unfair on the part of certain political parties to trespass on the offices of education department and exert undue influence on the officials.

He said it was certainly a commendable job to keep vigilance on the performance of government departments but standard procedure must be adopted to rectify any error or fault instead of directly interfering in the affairs of the office concerned. The lawmaker has demanded of the party chief, Imran Khan, to take cognizance of the situation and make his workers to refrain from undue inference in government departments. Correspondent Blast injures two BANNU, Oct 23: A passer-by and rickshaw driver sustained injuries in a roadside blast in the jurisdiction of Cantt police Station here on Wednesday.

Police and locals said suspected militants has planted an IED which went off with a bang resulting in injuries to a passer-by, Rehmanullah, and rickshaw driver, Arshad. Both the injured were taken to the district headquarters hospital Bannu where their condition was stated to be stable.

Meanwhile, in another incident one person was killed and two others including a police constable suffered injuries in an exchange of fire that took place between two groups.

The exchange of fire took place after a verbal clash between two rival groups at Mohallah Nawab at City police station. Correspondent
