ISLAMABAD: The ministry of water and power (MoWP) on Wednesday claimed the energy crisis would end by the next year when around 6,600 megawatt electricity would be added to the system.
The officials of the MoWP told a meeting of the subcommittee of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) that as of today the electricity`s shortfall was about 3,500 megawatt which would exceeds to 6,500 megawatt during the summer season.
They said that by June 2017, 6,600 megawatt and by June 2018, 12,000 megawatt electricity is likely to be added in the system.
The ministry claimed that by 2022, total power generation in the country would exceed 30,000 megawatt.
According to the ministry officials, during the last summer season, the electricity demand was 23,000 megawatt but the distribution company could supply 18,000 megawatt to its consumers.
The committee was informed that at present 40 independent power producers (IPPs) are operating in the country and under the China Pak Economic Corridor (CPEC) project more IPPs would go into operation across the country. The ministry informed the committee that in order to improve the distribution network, they have planned and executed several projects with the assistance of Asian Development Bank.
Sardar Ashiq Hussain Gopang, convener of the committee, expressed annoyance over the absence of secretary MoWP. The ministry`s officials told the committee that since the secretary was busy in the meeting of the federal cabinet therefore he could not appear before the PAC`s subcommittee.
