19 students injured in road accident

CHAKWAL: Nineteen students were injured in a road accident after the van carrying them overturned and fell into a creek near Khanpur village.

The van was travelling from Khanpur village to Takia Shah Murad village. Those aboard were students from Takia Shah Murad studying at various schools in Khanpur village.

The injured students were rushed to the District Headquarters (DHQ) Hospital and the Rural Health Centre (RHC), Dohman, by Rescue 1122. `We have received eight students. One is in critical condition and the other seven are stable,` a doctor at DHQ Hospital told Dawn.

Among the injured were Tanveer, 7, Fareed, 9, Aleezah, 12, Guria, 16, Rabia, 16, Zainab, 12, Usman, 14, and Hifza, 14. Students with minor injuries were taken to RHC Dohman.

The driver, identified as Mohammad Ramzan, is reported to have fled.

`The accident was due to rash driving, and the van was also overloaded,` Investigation officer Munavar Khan from the Dohman police station told Dawn. He added that the driver would be arrested soon.
