Teachers hold protest demo

Dawn Report 2017-08-25
BAHAWALPUR: The local chapter of the Punjab Teachers Union held a protest demonstration at the University Chowk against the Punjab government`s proposed move to hand over the district education authorities (DEAs) to the Punjab Education Foundation (PEF).

The protesting teachers said the government had already made most of the schools across the province hostage of the PEF and handing over the DE As to the foundation would destroy the education system.

They said the so-called standardised education system had already lowered the education standard in the schools under the PEF where exploitation of teachers was at its peak as they worked in bad conditions with a low salary.

They expressed apprehension that the fresh move would jeopardise thefuture ofboth students and teachers.

The protesters raised slogans against the government and demanded it drop the proposal; otherwise, they would take extreme steps to secure their own and students` future.

They also demanded revision of their pay scales.

DERA GHAZI KHAN: Primary and secondary schoolteachers staged a rally to demand their upgrade, regularisation of service and approval of promotion cases.

The protesting teachers, led by Punjab Teachers Union district president Rehmatullah, staged the rally from the press club to the Traffic Chowk. They were carrying banners inscribed with their demands.
