Proposed law to overhaul education sector: official

HARIPUR: The proposed Education Act was meant to overhaul the flawed education system that failed to address the problems of teachers, said Rafiq Khattak, the director of elementary and secondary education department.

Addressing teachers at Government Higher Secondary School Sera-iNehmat Khan, he said that government didn`t change a single coma in the service rules of teachers except three rules through the proposed law that was meant to introduce reforms in the education sector.

Mr Khattak said that the proposed law was in favour of teachers. He said that under the proposed law, teachers would be appointed on the basis of timescale while 40,000 teachers hired through NTS would be regularised.

The official said that teachers would be appointed at the nearest stations to their hometowns after getting their choice for three schools. He said that under the existing service rules, teachers became eligible for promotion at the time ofsuperannuation but under the proposed Act they would get next scale promotion after a fixed timescale.

Mr Khattak said that the proposed Act was a part of the government policy to reform education sector. He said that government published the contents of the proposed Act and sought suggestions from people bef ore finalising it.

SECURITY: Police finalised security arrangements for Muharram and declared all the imambargahs in the district as most sensitive.

Source said that at least 2,000 personnel of police, Elite Force and counter-terrorism department would be deployed at 19 imambargahs of the district and on the routes of processions.

The officials of bomb disposal squad would be also deployed outside the imambargahs and routes of processions. The links roads and main bazaar of Haripur would be closed on 8th Muharram.

The leaders of all the religious sects in Haripur have been taken on board by authorities for ensuring peace in the district. They have been asked to avoid delivering hate speeches during Muharram.
