KARACHI: Girls bagged all the top positions in the annual Pre-Engineering and General Science Part-H exams as the Board of Intermediate Education Karachi (BIEK) announced their results at the Sir Syed Government Degree Girls Science College here on Monday.

Hanifa Elahi of Bahria College stood first in the Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) exams with 992 marks out of a total of 1,100 to pass with a 90.18 percentage and get A-1 grade. About her college, Hanifa said it was a fine place of learning where students were encouraged to ask their teachers as many questions as they like. `Our teachers don`t move on to the next lesson until everyone has understood everything perfectly,` said Hanifa, who wants to be a software engineer.

The second position in the same group was taken by Iraj Ghufran of Begum Amina Majeed Malik (BAMM) PECHS Government College for Women with 989 marks and a 89.09 percentage.Meanwhile, two students, Hiba Saleem of Metropolis Intermediate College for Girls and Mohammad Umar Farooq of Adamjee Government Science College were third with identical marks of 988 and a 89.81 percentage.

In General Science, again a student of Bahria College bagged top honours. This time it was Sidra Urooj who got 947 marl(sout of a total of 1,100 to pass with 86.09 percentage and get A-1 grade. Sidra, too, said she wanted to study software engineering and was looking forward to getting admission in the National University of Sciences and Technology or Comsats. `The fees is not as important as making a career is,` she reasoned when someone from the media pointed out the exorbitant fees atthe universities mentioned.

Sabita Sadiq Shahabuddin of BAMM PECHS Government College for Women was second with 942 marks and a passing percentage of 85.64. Again, here as well, two students, Sameen Rehman of BAMM PECHS Government College for Women and Aiman Ejaz of Government Degree Boys and Girls College were third withidentical marks of 930 and a 84.55 passing percentage.

Providing the detail, BIEK Chairman Professor Inam Ahmed said that some 30,563 candidates registered for the pre-engineering group while 30,203 actually appeared in the exams of whom 13,701 passed giving a passing average of 45.46 per cent. Some 1,089 candidates bagged A-1 grade, 2,624 passedwith A-grade, 3,490 with B-grade, 3,917 with C-grade and 2,446 passed with D-grade.

Similarly, in the General Science, some 3,366 candidates registered while 3,313 appeared.

Of them 1,499 passed showing the passing grade as 45.25 per cent. Some 29 candidates bagged A-1 grade, 196 A-grade, 418 B-grade, 601 C-grade and 245 got D-grade.
