Girl dies due to doctors` negligence

2014-05-27
LAHORE: A two-and-ahalf-year-old girl, who was under treatment for dehydration, died due to alleged gross negligence by the doctors at Services Hospital.

A doctor had mistakenly passed nasogastric (NG) tube into the trachea instead of down to the stomach which led to the respiratory complications and ultimate death of the baby girl, her father alleged in an application filed with the Shadman police station.

Asif took her daughter, Fatima, to the emergency department of Services Hospital on May 19 from where the doctors shifted her to the Medical Unit-I for further treatment.

He alleged that a seniordoctor had recommended treatment through NG tube and left the ward. His daughter remained under treatment for about three days.

Meanwhile, Fatima`s condition got critical when an onduty doctor passed the NG tube to feed the girl. Senior doctors were later called who tried to remove the complications but to no avail.

Police did not take action on the complaint until the filing of this report.

Hospital MS Dr Rehana said the victim`s family neither approached the administration nor did file any complaint.

She said an inquiry committee would be constituted on Tuesday (today) to probe the incident.Staff Reporter
