HEC officer robbed of official laptop

2015-08-27
ISLAMABAD: An officer of the Higher Education Commission (HEC) was robbed of an official laptop carrying records of plagiarism cases and other valuables, on Wednesday.

Besides the laptop, the unidentified individuals also stole a hard disc, mobile phones and a television.

HEC Deputy Director Quality Assurance Munir Ahmed had been investigating plagiarism cases. On Wednesday, Ahmed registered a theft complaint with Ramna police station.

In his application he told the police that unidentified individuals broke into his G-11 home on Tuesday and stole valuables. Some HEC officials suspect that Ahmed may have been under pressure from plagiarists, some of whom may be behind the theft.

Others claim that Ahmed made plagiarism cases against reputed educationists, and may have staged the robbery himself.

Ahmed himself was not available for comment.

However, police sources told Dawn that the case seems to be a simple theft, saying that anyone after the plagiarism cases had no reason to steal a television.

HEC spokesperson Ayesha Ikram said: `It`s a sad incident, but there is no reason to worry; the HEC has a complete backup of all plagiarism cases.`-A Reporter
