Heritage building demolition case sent to anti-corruption court

KARACHI: A judicial magistrate sent on Thursday a case regarding demolition of a heritagebuildinginSoldierBazaarto an anti-corruption court for trial after the Counter-Terrorism Department filed an interim charge sheet.

The investigating officer charge-sheeted FIA Inspector Adnan Ali, suspended SHO of the Soldier Bazaar police station Irshad Soomro, ASI Hakim Ali, mukhtiarkar Ahmed Memon, surveyor Ghulam Fareed Chauhan, Abid Shabbir, Zeeshan and some other suspects and showed three mukhtiarkars and two assistant commissioners as absconders.

The interim investigation report said that Abid, Zeeshan and Adnan along with their accomplices attempted to encroach upon the land after demolishing the building, adding that the mukhtiarkar and the surveyor had issued a noobjection certificate despite the fact that the building was declared a heritage site by theculture department.

The report further said that the area SHO remained unable to act against the suspects in accordance with the law. The IO listed 28 prosecution witnesses in the interim charge sheet.

The suspects, in collusion with some officials of the revenue department and others, had allegedly demolished the Britishera building, located inside Tufelhurst School in Soldier Bazaar, on the night of April 8.

Meanwhile, a CTD official wrote to his high-ups seeking action against the prosecutor for asking the court to declare the case of civil nature.

The letter said that during a remand hearing before the judicial magistrate, assistant district public prosecutor Mohammed Akram argued against the contents of the remand paper and the FIR and said that the case was of civil nature, which allegedly damaged the prosecution`s case.

It added that the prosecutor had allegedly favoured the accused party on the behest of one of the defence lawyers, who is the son of districtpublic prosecutor.

Acid thrower jailed for 10 years An antiterrorism court sentenced on Thursday a man to 10 years in prison in an acid attack case.

Shoaib, alias Shebi, was found guilty of attacking and injuring Mohammed Saleem in April 2015 at a shrine in the Azeempura graveyard in Malir.

Pronouncing the judgement, the ATC-X judge also directed the convict to pay a fine of Rs50,000 and in case of default he would undergo an additional six-month imprisonment.

The court ruled that the case stood proved as the testimonies of witnesses were corroborated by documentary and circumstantial evidence, adding that the complainant sustained severe and incurable injuries resulting in disfigurement.

A case was registered under Sections 324 (attempt to commit murder), 336-B (punishment for irlaf-i-salahiyyat-i-udw [destroys or permanently impairs functioning power or capacity of an organ of body of another personor cause permanent disfigurement]) and 34 (common intention) of the Pakistan Penal Code read with Section 7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act, 1997 on the complaint of the victim at the Al-Falah police station. Naveed, alias Kubba, and his wife Zubaida are absconders in the case.

Donkey hides case A special court of customs, excise and taxation remanded on Thursday a Chinese national and six other suspects for a week in custody of the Customs authorities in a case pertaining to illegal trade of donkey hides.

Police had arrested Tu Zhong Xiao, Ihtisham Ahmed, his wife Afshan, Daniyal, Jumman, Faisal and Zeeshan Patras in Gulistan-i-Jauhar and allegedly seized over 4,700 hides worth Rs118 million in the international market.

The Customs officials produced the suspects before the court and sought their custody for questioning. The court granted seven-day physical remand.
