Lahore suicide attack death toll rises to 72

LAHORE: The death toll caused by Sunday`s suicide attack in a crowded park here rose to 72 after another two injured died on Monday.

According to official figures, the dead included 29 children and teenagers and 10 women. Of the 355 injured, 203 were discharged from hospitals in the city on Monday.

DIG operations Dr Haider Ashraf said that 67 bodies had been handed over to families while five were yet to be identified.

The Punjab government declared an emergency in Lahore and announced three days of mourning. Schools and markets remained partially closed in the city.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif and Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan visited Jinnah Hospital and directed the authorities concerned to provide the best treatment to the injure d.

`Uncle, why terrorists are attacking us?` a source in the hospital quoted an injured child as having asked the prime minister.

`The prime minister said we will eliminate them,` the source said.

A large number of relatives of the victims gathered outside the hospital and criticised the government for its failure toprotect their loved ones.

The Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) of Lahore police registered an FIR against four unidentified terrorists under sections 7 of Anti-Terrorism Act and 302, 324,109,407120-8 and 34 of the Pakistan Penal Code on behalf of the state.

CTD officials, forensic experts and investigators visited the crime scene, collected evidence, including parts of the attacker`s body and suicide vest and ball bearings, and sent them to a forensic laboratory.

A CTD official told Dawn that the investigators were still `clueless` about the suicide attacker and were investigating the matter.

Earlier, one Mohammad Yousuf of Muzaffargarh was identified as the `suicide bomber` and law-enforcement personnel picked up his two brothers and some relatives from Multan. Yousuf later turned out to be one of the victims. `We investigated but could not find any link of Yousuf or members of his family with terrorists. He appeared to be one of the visitors at the park,` the official said. He said forensic experts were trying to ascertain the identity of another man whose skull was found from the crime scene.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif constituted a five-member team to investigate the park carnage.

According to a notification by the Punjab home department, the Joint Investigation Team comprises CTD SP investigation (convener), two officials from the InterServices Intelligence and Intelligence Bureau, investigation in charge of Iqbal Town police station and CTD Lahore SHO.
