Home minister`s take on attacks

SAHIWAL, April 28: Punjab has rather been safe in recent terrorism activities because the two parties on the hit list of militants are not so active in the province, said Punjab Home Minister Tariq Pervez at a press conference in Sahiwal on Sunday.

Without naming the parties, he said the parties being targeted by religious terrorists in other provinceshad no candidates in Punjab as most of their candidates were based in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Sindh.

He said the Punjab government was vigilant and in the next 13 days, political activities would remain peaceful.

About candidates` political gatherings in the name of corner meetings, the home minister said a meeting ad-dressed without a public address system was lawful.

Using loudspeaker in a meeting was illegal and violation of election code, he added.

He was informed that 2,993 polling stations had been established in Sahiwal division and of them 20 per cent had been declared sensitive. The minister said up to 4,000 polling stations had been declared troubled in Punjab.Regional Police Officer Sahibzada Muhammad Shahzad Sultan told Dawn security personnel would be deployed at sensitive polling stations and surveillance cameras would also be installed there.

Divisional Commissioner Abdullah Khan Sumbal told Dawn the administration had arranged transport for election staff.
