Teachers protest against govt

FAISALABAD: Teachers say the money is being spent on the advertisement of `Paro Punjab, Baro Punjab` that is not improving the standard of education.

They said this at a demonstration at the District Council Chowk on Tuesday. The demonstration was organised by the Muttahida Mahaz-i-Asatza against government`s policies.

Chanting slogans and carrying banners and placards, they said the money being spent on advertisements should have been spent on streamlining educational policies.

They said the government forced them to perform duties like polio immunisation campaigns. They said the presence of teachers at schools would help improve the literacy rate.

`What will we deliver in schools when we have to struggle for our rights?` Hafiz Abdul Nadir, former president of the association, said. He demanded that the government take cognisance of the situation and resolve issue of teachers such as merging ad hoc allowances and revise pay scales. He said teachers were on road to save the education system and they would show their full strength in Lahore on May 8.

NEPALESE STUDENTS: Nepalese students of the Punjab Medical College (PMC) will launch a drive on roads for collecting funds for the earthquake victims of their country.

The students will start the campaign from Wednesday (today) as they have taken the office-bearers of the Pakistan Medical Association (PMA) and the Medical Teachers Association on board.

Talking to Dawn, Jenish, a Nepalese student of the Punjab Medical College for the last three years, said 18 students belonging to his country were studying in the college and all of them would take part in the drive to collect funds for quake victims.

`Sensing severity of the earthquake, we are also coordinating with other Nepalese students enrolled in other institutes of Pakistan. And if other college administrations allow us, we will certainly approach students, teachers and the staff members of such institutes,` Jenish said.

A delegation of Nepalese students will also meet PMC Principal Prof Muhammad Ali Tirmizey in this regard.

PMA Secretary Dr Muhammad Irfan said the association would help the Nepal people in this tragic time and would send doctors without any delay if asked by the government.

He said the association would approach the doctors, students, politicians and people of dif ferent walks of life for donations.
