Police recover arms from canal bed

BAHAWALPUR: The Baghdadul Jadid police claim to have recovered a cache of illegal arms from a canal near the city late Thursday night.

Sources told Dawn that a police team raided the dried-up Ahmedpur Branch canal near the southern bypass (near Yazman Road) and recovered weapons.

According to DPO`s PRO Jam Sajid, the illegal arms recovered from the canal bed included five guns of 12 Bore, three rifles of 7 m.m. and three semi-automatic rifles.

The police registered a case No 478/16 on Friday against unidentified persons and are investigating.RAID: Regional Police Officer Muhammad Idrees Ahmed during surprise visit to the Government Postgraduate College, Baghdad Road, on Friday inspected the security arrangements.

The RPO checked the `Panic Alarm System` by pressing its key. Personnel of the Quick Response Force and other related law-enforcement agencies reached the scene within minutes.

The police officer expressed satisfaction over the security measures in the college and directed the administration to strengthen the control room, increase the number of CCTV cameras and conduct a mock security exercise of the staff to check their training and efficiency.
