Power cut to Jalozai camp sparks protest

NOWSHERA: Internally displaced persons of Bara on Wednesday staged a protest demonstration against the Peshawar Electric Supply Company for disconnecting power supply to Jalozai camp.

The Pesco said the power supply to the IDPs camp was disconnected over non-payment of dues by the Fata Disaster Management Authority.

The IDPs chanted slogans against Pesco and demanded of the government to order restoration of power supply to them. They said that they had been rendered homeless due to military operation in Khyber Agency.

The power supply was cut just after a foreign delegation concluded a visit to the camp to monitor the food distribution process on Wednesday.

`The government had assured the Pesco regarding payment of about Rs23 million dues, but failed to honour its promise due to which power supply to the camp was severed,` a company official told Dawn.

The Bara IDPs said that they had been facing various problems, including shortage of water, non-availability of schools and health facilities.

The Pesco official said that the company that sent report of power disconnection to the provincial government and the governor.

Pesco Pabbi subdivision, II AMO Tariq Mehmood confirmed disconnection of power supply to the IDPs camp and said that the step was takenaftertheconcernedauthority failed to pay the dues.
