12-year-old girl gets gift of sight

LAHORE: A 12-year-old girl got her sight restored through a latest procedure performed by surgeons of the Lahore General Hospital for the first time in Pakistan.

Alishba, a resident of Kot Abdul Maalik, had been suffering from a rare disease characterised by clouding of both corneas from infancy. Called `primary congenital endothelial dystrophy` in medical terminology, the disorder can lead to blindness.

The LGH Ophthalmology Department doctors contributed the amount for buying cornea from Sri Lanka, its preparation from FEMTO laser and other expenses of the procedure.

`The vision in the left eye of the girl, a class V student, has been restored,` said Prof Dr Abdul Haee, the in-charge of Unit 11 of LGH Ophthalmology Depanment, who led surgeons during DSAEK (Descernet`s Stripping and Automated Endothelial Keratoplasty).

Habib Ahmed, the father of Alishba, said the operation was performed free of cost. He was all praise for the administration of the Lahore General Hospital for restoring the vision of his daughter. Staff Reporter
