Man gets death, fine for parricide

BAHAWALPUR: A court on Friday handed down death sentence and fine to a man who killed his parents last year.

Muhammad Zaman had shot dead his father and mother over some family dispute. Baghdadul Jadid police had registered a case and submitted challan to the court.

On Friday, Additional District and Sessions Judge Naveed Bari handed down death sentence on two counts along with a fine of Rs200,000 to Zaman.

MINOR SISTERS DIE: Twounder-treatment minor sisters, who were administered poison by their mother three days back, died here on Friday night at the emergency ward of Bahawal Victoria Hospital.

Three days back, Shahnaz Bibi had administered poison to her daughters Zainab (9) and Rabab Bibi (6) and herself consumed it.

They were rushed to the BVH where Shahnaz expired while the minors were being treated.

Police said the woman had disputes with her husband Imran Shah, who was reportedly not at home when she took the drastic step.

RESEARCH AWARDS: The Higher Education Commission (HEC) has granted 12 research awards under `National Research Grant Programme for universities 2016` to Islamia University Bahawalpur.

According to an IUB release, out of total 47 research projects submitted to the HEC, 33 were approved and [research] grant for 12 projects was released to the university.

The release claimed that IUB for the first time got 12 awards. The newly-established Ghazi University, Dera Ghazi Khan, was also granted a research award.
