Students attend classes under open sky in chilly weather

TIMERGARA: The students of the damaged schools in the district have complained that they attend classes under the open sky asnone ofthe government officials or politicians has so far visited the schools ruined by Monday`s earthquake.

The earthquake destroyed 16 schools and damaged 267 others in the district.

During a visit to government primary school in Ghuzano Banda, the teachers and parents informed a media team that students were attending classes under the open sky as their school was destroyed by the earthquake.

Wahid Zaman, the head teacher, told journalists that 170 students were enrolled in the school. He said that the school was established in 1987.

Khan Mohammad, watchman of the school, said no government official or lawmaker had so far visited the destroyed school.The parent-teacher council of the area demanded immediate provision of tents, removal of the debris and reconstruction of the school.

Similarly, the students of government primary schools in Mirgam Bala and Khadagzai also read under the open sky as their schools have not been provided with tents.

An official of education department, when contacted, said that the department had compiled date of the completely and partially damaged schools in the district. However, he said they had no resources to rent buildings for schools.

Meanwhile, Education Secretary Ali Raza along with Schools Director Rafiq Khattak paid visits to some of the damaged schools in Chakdara and Timergara. The education secretary later met with Deputy Commissioner Irfanullah Wazir and executive engi-neer and asked them to estimate reconstruction cost of the damaged schools.

The deputy commissioner was also asked to send updated damage assessment report so that the damaged schools could be rebuilt on war footing.

Also in the day, the earthquake victims belonging to different villages of Jandol complained that they had not been provided with tents, blankets and other relief items despite a lapse of four days.

Registering complaint with the assistant commissioner Jandol, PTI district general secretary Ali Shah Mishwani, ANP district president Hussain Shah Yousafzai and Haji Bahadar Khan alleged that several families in the area had to spend nights under the open sky or in the hujras of their relatives but the administration had done nothing to provide any relief to them. Correspondent
