KP ruling parties to protest power, gas outages today

Bureau Report 2013-12-30
PESHAWAR: Coalition parties in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government will meet on Monday (today) to take stock of power and gas loadshedding in the province.

The elected representatives and workers of the coalition parties will also besiege the Wapda House and Sui gas offices in the city, while the cabinet members, MPAs and MNAs are set join the protest.

This was announced by Ziaullah Afridi, adviser to the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chief minister, while speaking at a press conference at Peshawar Press club on Sunday.

He said that the federal government was carrying out prolonged loadshedding of power and gas to discredit the provincial government by creating unrest among public.

Accompanied by MNA Sajid Nawaz, MPAs Ishtiaq Ormar, Mehmood Jan, Fazal Ilahi, Arbab Jahandad and others, Mr Afridi said that the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa was generating 4,500 megawatt of electricity while only 1,500 megawatt was made available to it against its demand of 2,300 megawatt.

Expressing concern over the unscheduled and prolonged loadshedding of power and gas in Peshawar, the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf leader warned the federal government to stop the injustices or be ready to face public wrath.

Similarly, he said that Khyber Pakhtunkhwa was also producing sufficient natural gas, but even then majority of people here had been facing its loadshedding.

The situation in rural areas, he said, was more serious as both gas and power supply was suspended for many hours though the consumers had been paying their utility bills regularly.

The CM`s adviser said that State Minister Abid Sher Ali was blaming Pakhtuns for gas and power theft, but he easily ignored the losses in Punjab. He said that the power company was replacing power metres, but cable/electric wire was not provided and the consumers had been forced to pay for the same.

Mr Afridi said that by carrying out prolonged loadshedding the federal government was dishonouring the public mandate of the elected people of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

He said that the federal government was also reluctant to pay the outstanding amount of net hydel profit.

The PTI leader said that during its previous government, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz had stopped wheat and flour supply from Punjab to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and now it was creating hurdles to the gas and power supply.

`We will foil conspiracies against the provincial government and continue to raise voice for rights of our people.

The PTI is determined to serve the people and fulfill its commitments,` he claimed.

He warned the federal government to stop creating hurdles for the provincial government otherwise the PTI was in a position to create problems for the PML-N in Punjab.
