PPP for doing away with entrance test for medical colleges

By Our Staff Reporter 2015-08-31
LAHORE: The PPP has demanded discontinuation of entrance test for admission to medical colleges in Punjab.

`Entrance test is antimerit and discriminatory in nature because students who secure 950 marks out of 1,000 in the FSc examination may not get admission in a medical college due to this hurdle,` PPP Punjab President Manzoor Wattoo said in a statement here on Sunday.

He recalled that in 198687 legislation was passed to introduce merit in medical and engineering institutions. Parents and students were satisfied with the merit for seeking admission to pro-fessional colleges and there was no complaint from students who were denied admission if they did not secure enough to come up to the merit in FSc.

`The same legislation also did away with quota system of governor, chief minister, principals of colleges and was working perfectly as there was no complaint from any side,` he added.

Wattoo said the `victims` of entrance test system were those students who came from Urdu-medium background as it favoured English-medium students.

`It is discriminatory becauseltreduces prospects of Urdu-medium students in getting admission despite good marks,` he further said.
