LAHORE: The government decision to hand over administrative control of the power distribution system in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to the PTI-led provincial government will open a Pandora`s box and complicate inter-provincial issues.
This was a consensus among representatives of six constituent trade unions of the Pakistan Workers Confederation at a meeting here onMonday. A retired member (power) of Wapda, Syed Tanzeem Husain Naqvi, was also among the participants.
Through a resolution, the meeting appealed to both the federal and KP governments to pool their resources for the development of hydel and coal-fired thermal plants to increase electricity generation.
Both governments should join hands to make the closed power generation units functional, prevent pilferage and theft through measures and recover dues.`The decision, if implemented, will do more harm than good and may prove devastating for the interprovincial harmony. KP Chief Minister Parvez Khattak has also sought control of power generation as well. What if the KP government refuses to supply electricity to any other province in future or stops water supply from reservoirs in its jurisdiction? The move would have more devastating effects than privatising power distribution in Karachi,` said the resolution.
