T HIS is apropos the letter `Stealing Karachi`s water` (Dec 17). The chief justice has been questioning Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah and former Karachi mayor Mustaf a Kamal about the water issue.
The Sindh chief minister who is incharge of the province for less than two years, is held responsible for water shortages and contamination in Sindh. Then what about Mustafa Kamal who served as Karachi mayor for a long time. It was during his tenure that Karachi faced acute water shortages and the tanker mafia was busy minting money. This mafia then operated in connivance with the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board, which worked under Kamal.
Kamal, who now heads Pak Sarzameen Party (PSP), seems worried about Karachi`s water situation, but never speaks about the 12-inch diameter pipeline given to Bahria Town when he was the mayor. He was duly rewarded with a job in Dubai. I suggest the chief justice probe how and why this water scheme meant for Karachi was presented by Kamal to Bahria Town.
I would like to know why Kamal built bridges and U-turns without planning, now forcing the current administrators to demolish them to ease traf fic congestion.
Kamal should be asked why he failed to provide mass transport like a subway which would have decreased road traffic considerably.
The formation of a joint investigation team to probe into the Karachi affairs during Kamal would be more beneficial.
