Dacca jail inquiry

CALCUTTA: The Government of Bengal have, it is learnt, decided to appoint a tribunal to enquire into the Dacca Jail incident which occurred on August 31. The personnel is under consideration.
It will be recalled that a `communique` issued by the Bengal Government stated that on August 31st last a number of Goonda Security prisoners, i.e., habitual or professional criminals, transferred to the Dacca Jail from Calcutta, mutinied and refused to work. When the jail staff attempted to ascertain what if any grievance the prisoners had, they were assaulted, and the `communique` added that so threatening and violent was the behaviour of the prisoners that it proved impossible to restore order without opening fire.
Twenty-nine criminals and one jail warder were killed and over 136 including some jail staff injured in this disturbance. Agencies [Meanwhile, as reported from Lahore] a `Gazette Extraordinary` announces that the Punjab Government have cancelled their order of 14th September 1942 requiring all printers, publishers and editors of newspapers and periodicals, published in the Punjab, to submit before publication for scrutiny, to the Special Press Adviser, Lahore, all matter relating to such activities of students or of those associating with or assisting or encouraging them, as are likely directly or indirectly to promote or assist the momentum of the present Congress movement or advertise that movement police action taken against it.-Dawn Delhi
