Equal constituencies

2018-02-01
APROPOS the article `Equalising constituencies` (Jan 16). There is no uniformity or equilibrium of registered voters in the constituencies. For example, in the 2013 elections, in the National Assembly constituency, NA-256, there were 459,185 registered voters to elect a representative, whereas in NA-47 there were 121,265 registered voters.

This means that the vote of a citizen in NA-47 has 378.66 per cent more weightage than the vote of a citizen in NA-256. This is a violation of a citizen`s fundamental rights, mentioned in Article 8 (1) and (2), Equality of Citizens Article 25 (1) and Composition of the Parliament Article 51(5) and (6) (a) of the Constitution of Pakistan.

The Election Commission of Pakistan should address these and other anomalies.

It should make adjustments as well as create new constituencies on the basis of a minimum common base number of registered voters to elect a representative in the assemblies allowing not more than five per cent variation.
