Outstanding dues Power supply to land record centre suspended

SAHIWAL: The Multan Electric Power Company (Mepco) disconnecte d electricity supply to the local computerised land record centre allegedly over non-payment of a bill of Rs49,900.

The power company said the centre had not paid the bill for last three months.

Mepco officials said they had issued warnings to the public department, but in vain. On Tuesday, Mepco linemen disconnected the connection. A number of people seeking computerised land registration were said to be suffering as the system had shut down.

Muhammad Rafi of Kameer Townsaid he went to the revenue centre for transfer of land, but no staff was working because of the power disconnection.

The centre generator was also lying dysfunctional due to which over 100 clients were suffering, and they demanded restoration of the electricity.

PENSIONS: More than 2,500 pensioners and retired employees of the districtcouncilandSahiwalMunicipal Corporation have not received their pensions for two months. The pensioners demanded the Punjab government release their dues in a new account immediately.

Around 750 and 1,800 retired employees of the old tehsil committee and district council, respectively were pensioners and drawing their pensions from thetehsil committee account. After introduction of the new local body laws, the tehsil committee status had been upgraded to Municipal Corporation.

Recently, before the mayor and district council chairman took oath, the Punjab government froze all local government accounts. It was in this background that more than 2,500 pensioners of both houses were suffering.

`No staff member of both houses has received salary for two months,` Amir Sherazi, All Pakistan Clerks Association divisional office-bearer, told Dawn.

Pensioners claimed neither the deputy commissioner nor the mayor was taking the pension issue seriously. They demanded the chief minister look into the matter and have their dues released.
