LAHORE: The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Friday sought a traffic management plan for school hours, calling for collaboration between the Lahore Development Authority (LDA) and the traffic police.

Hearing petitions on environmental issues, Justice Shahid Karim stressed that the LDA should encourage its engineers to come up with new ideas for resolving traffic issues. Hedirected the Punjab home and finance departments to make an early decision regarding improvement of traffic wardens` working conditions.

The judge praised the traffic police for showing effective management during cricket matches in the city but pointed out that two-way traffic on service lanes caused traffic congestion on the city roads. He observed that a fine of Rs10,000 should be imposed on violation of one-way.

The judge directed the authorities to instal more cameras on roads and impose heavy fines for traffic violations.

Justice Karim observed that proper traffic engineering was the key to controlling traffic problems. He remarked that the people worldwide followed the same basic principles, yet in Pakistan, enforcing traffic laws remained a challenge.

Expressing concern at emission of hazardous gases from drains, the judge noted that thegases not only damaged electronic devices but also posed serious health risks to citizens.

He underlined that public awareness and responsibility were equally important and the government could not handle everything alone.

The judge adjourned further hearing till March 7.
