10 PAT men get jail term for attacking police

TOBA TEK SINGH: Anti-Terrorism Court Judge Raja Pervaiz Akhtar handed down on Tuesday five-year imprisonment and Rs100,000 fine each to 10 activists of Pakistan Awami Tehrik (PAT) for attacking and injuring policemen.

Gojra city police had registered a case against 14 PAT workers under the Anti-Terrorism Act for allegedly attacking a police party and injuring six policemen including SHO Aftab Ahmad Siddiqui on Aug 9, 2014.

According to the FIR, when a police party raided the house of PAT leader Falak Sher Jat at Chak 366-JB to arrest him who was holding a meeting to discuss their participation in sit-in in Lahore, the party workers had attacked policemen, injuring the SHO and five constables.

The convicts included Khalid, Shahid, Tanweer, Mahmood Tatla, Bilal, Usman, Umair, Naeem, Qurban and Zulfiqar.

The court acquitted four PAT activists Saeed, Saleem, Abdul Sattar and Ghulam Abbas as the prosecution failed to prove charges against them.

NOMINATIONS: Asmany as 24 candidates filed their nomination papers for five wards of Shorkot Cantonment Board on the last day on Tuesday with Presiding Officer Haider Ali Sial.

None of the 24 candidates showed their political affiliation although the Lahore High Court had allowed them to do so.

Scrutiny of papers will be held from April 1 to 4 while appeals against rejections of papers will be heard from April 6 to 9.

The final lists will be displayed on April 11.

Elections will be held on April 25. Cantonment board elections are being held after 17 years.

LIFE TERM: Kamalia Additional District and Sessions Judge Sardar Iqbal Dogar handed down on Tuesday life imprisonment to two suspects in a murder case.

The court also ordered convicts Ghulam Abbas and Sarfraz Ahmad to pay Rs150,000 each as fine.

The court acquitted their three co-accused Shaukat, Fayaz and Farooq giving them the benefit of the doubt.

All five were booked by Pirmahal police for killing youth Farooq at Chak 671/12 GB in 2013 on suspicion that the deceased had illicit relations with a girl of their family.
