The irony
2025-05-01
AS the world observes the Labour Day today (May 1), most people have their plans charted outbecause itis a holiday for them. What about the labourers who work day and night? What about the daily wage-earners? After all, it is supposedly their day, but they do not get even a day off. Ironic, right? While factory owners and executive staff enjoy an additional holiday, the labourers keep working like any other day. For them, it is life as usual. Every year we see this happening. But we are just not bothered.
Labourers work the hardest, but they are treated the worst. Their hands build everything we use, but they hardly get any respect. We post quotes on social media, and deliver speeches in luxury hotels about dignity of labour.
But we do nothing to make the labourers feel dignified even on Labour Day. They remain busy working on their machines, on the roads, and at construction sites.
All this while, society at large enjoys a holiday in their name. Is this what dignity of labour all about? Why is it so difficult for us to make the labourers feel important, acknowledged and respected even on Labour Day? The day should actually be about the labourers, not their bosses.
